【Day13】 いつまでも降る雪に 今はもう迷わない -It starts to snow in the street of the Rockys- [2nd/May]

テントを畳んでいると散歩客が。
出勤前の朝活かな。朝一は何をするにも良いらしいからね。

Okay, the distance from Jasper to Banff is about 300km. Wanna stay at a hostel at the middle point tonight, however it is difficult because there must be uphills... Probably an RV park 100km away from here is fine. It seems that most of campgrounds opened yesterday, but in the Rockys. Well, I will see the reason later...

さて、ジャスパーからバンフまでは300km。
中間あたりにホステルがあるみたいだから今日中に着きたいけど…アップダウンが激しいだろうから難しいか。
今夜は100km地点のRVパーク(キャンピングカー用の滞在場所)で野営かな。
多くのキャンプ場は昨日からオープンしているようだけど、このロッキーエリアはまだだ。
…その理由を後に理解することになるのだが。

Right after starting the day, I got strange feeling on my rear tire. "Oh boy, please say no..." This is the 3rd time, you damn flat tire. Is my fixing something wrong?

出発早々、後輪に違和感。なんかゴリゴリするんですけど…
三度目のパンクだった。ちょっと多すぎないか、おい。僕のやり方が何か悪いのだろうか。

While biking, I noticed something is moving on the opposite line. Drat, a bear?

しばらく走っていると、対向車線で何かが蠢いた。やべえ、クマか？

Nope, it was a human. Jojo, Korean cyclist. He is not going across Canada, but making a pretty long journey from Vancouver to around the Rockys. I was surprised because I haven't expected meeting a "coworker" in this area at this time. Very nice encounter! Took a picture each other, and gave my blog URL. "Be careful, there is snowy." He warned me. Oh snow, I just let by it at this time...

と思ったら、人だった。
韓国人のジョジョ。横断ではないが、バンクーバーからロッキーあたりをぐるりと回っているらしい。
この時期にこの場所で「同期」に会うとは思わなかったので、驚いた。
お互いに写真を撮り、ブログのアドレスを渡す。
「この先は雪だから、気を付けてね」と注意してくれるジョジョ。
へぇ雪かあ、と軽く聞き流していた。そう、このときは…



By the way, this is a well-known fact for those who've lived in Canada... The relationship between Japan and Korea is said to be the worst today, but in real, Koreans I've met in Canada are really awesome people. I've never found offensive acts or words. Maybe because of similar cultures, we can get closer very easily. :)

ちなみに。カナダで暮らしたことのある方には今さらの話ですが…
日韓関係最悪とも言われる昨今だけど、実際に会う彼らは実に気さくで良い人たちだ。
反日感情を露わにされたようなことは一度もない。
ご近所で似通ってる文化も多いからか、打ち解けやすいしね。
報道等に踊らされて偏見を持ってしまうってのは、哀しいもんだと思う。

はい、「ロッキーは寒いだろなあ」くらいにしか考えてませんでした。
しかしその実、ここはまだ冬なんですね。
事前に分かるだろうに。アホである。

Arrived Columbia Icefield, after 100km biking, almost sunset.

雪を掻き分け100km、日も暮れかけたころ、ようやくコロンビアアイスフィールドに到着。

It is getting stronger snowing. You inbecile...

そして強さを増す雪。アホである。



Hmm, the RV park must be around here...

さて、目当てのRVパークはこのあたりなのだが…

Holy crap, covered with snow... I gave it a try, but for sure, it was too deep to go into. Hey, isn't this pretty bad situation, man?

試しに突っ込んでみたけど、雪が深くてとても無理だった。
あれ、この状況ヤバいんじゃね？

キャンプ場がオープンしない理由。雪。
無知は罪なのだ。
アホである。



Night falls. Snow is much stronger and it is getting colder. I shouldn't freeze to death here... 'kay, have no choice.

間もなく日が暮れる。
雪は更に勢いを増し、気温もぐんぐんと下がってきている。
…こんなところで凍死するわけにはいかない。
迷いはなかった。

Hotel! Inside, warm, large, paradice! The only option I should take is staying at Icefield Centre which is located in front of the icefield. At first they said "We have no vacancy, there is a motel 30 mitutes from here." 30min, yah, by car. I-I-I came here by-by-bicycle, it would be f-f-fine if I c-c-could set up a tent behind th-th-the building (shivering). "Oh no way! we can prepare one room." Thank goodness, I managed not to die tonight. How stupid... Even though I could get a discount, the fee was about five times as much as campground. Ahh... okay, it will be no problem if I bike pretty hard to short the total day of the journey, and sleep in the open air as many as possible. This staying should be thought as a reward for the two weeks biking, shouldn't it?

室内だ、暖かい、広い、天国！

氷原の眼前、アイスフィールドセンターに宿泊する。もう選択肢はこれしか無かった。
本当は満室扱いだったらしく、最初は「ここから30分走ればモーテルがあるわよ」と告げられた。30分。車ならね。
いや自転車で来だんでずよ裏手にデンド張らぜでぐれでも良いんでずげどね、と言ったら
「さすがにそんなことさせられないわ！」と、急遽ひと部屋用意してくれた。
死なずに済んだ。しかし本当にアホである。
少しディスカウントまでしてくれたのだが、それでもお値段はキャンプ場の5倍ほど。
…まあ、二週間走ってきた自分へのご褒美と捉えて良いんじゃないかな！
中後盤で距離を稼いで総日数を減らし、かつ野宿メインにすれば取り返せる。はず。



Took a bath with really hot water and had hot chocolate. Noticed I was tuckered out today. Flopped down on a fluffy bed, and fell deep sleep.

バスタブに熱湯を張り、逆上せるまで浸かる。
あまりの気持ちよさに、入浴後しばらくは放心状態だった。
部屋に置いてあるホットチョコレートを飲むと、強い虚脱感に襲われる。
ふかふかのベッドに倒れ込み、深い眠りに落ちてゆくのであった。
